Ascension Sunday

Lord God, it seems strange to us that when we celebrate your ascending into heaven, we celebrate your absence.

So as we lift our eyes to heaven, help us to be the Body of Christ on earth.

Lord, we long for your spirit to fill our church – that we may be truly present in this world’s suffering.

Where parents sift through bins for their family meals; where orphans beg in the street for their food; where compassion is the only source of nourishment,

May your church be present, and may you be present through us.

Where governments budget for war; where trade laws favour the wealthy; where business is given a vote: May your church be present, and may you be present through us.

Where broken relationships crush people; where the death of a loved one stings to the core;  where loneliness tightens its grip;  May your church be present, and may you be present through us.

Lord, though you are in heaven, do not distance yourself from us.

May we seek your presence in others, hear your voice in others, offer you our love through loving others.

By your Spirit, and by your grace – may the paths of our discipleship be marked by your own foot-prints.
